Bulldogs go for gold at state
Published February 5, 2010
Much like the school’s football team, which won the its fourth Georgia Independent School Association championship last November, the George Walton Academy wrestling squad hopes to leave the GISA in memorable fashion.
GWA will join the Georgia High School Association next fall.
The Bulldogs grapplers head to the state championship meet in Perry this weekend with high aspirations — winning the school’s first GISA title. With its entire team qualified, GWA is bettered positioned than ever to return home Saturday with a bus full of hardware.
“Taking your whole team is definitely an advantage,” said Bulldogs head coach Bob Jones. “It gives us a good shot.”
For the first time, the meet will combine both the individual and team championships. In separate meets last winter, two Bulldogs returned with personal titles while the team finished runner up.
After coasting to its third straight region championship last Monday, all 14 Bulldog wrestlers earned births in the state meet. Twelve took first in their weight class, one finished as a runner-up, and another wrestled himself into the fourth place position.
Leading the Bulldogs into the state tournament will be sophomore Justin Sperin (145 pounds), the team’s lone returning defending state champ, and Jake Reeder (140), the squad’s only senior.
Other qualifiers include Myles Johnson (103), Joseph Switay (112), Luke Anderson (119), Matthew Kelly (125), Casey Shubert (130), Andrew Bullard (135), Len Young (152), Evan South (160), Keegan Wilson (171), Tyler Jarvis (189), Nolan Bullard (215), Alex Ortega (heavyweight).
GWA enters the state meet on a roll, having easily won the Georgia Independent School Association Coaches Dual Championship last weekend.
Competing on their home floor, the Bulldogs won three straight duals in the single elimination tournament.
They knocked off Tift Area and Trinity Christian to make the finals, where they trounced Westfield 56-22.
