Bulldogs win their openers

Published March 2, 2008

MONROE — The George Walton Academy varsity tennis team opened its tennis season with a pair of victories as both teams blanked region rival Mt. Vernon 5-0 at the Hammond Park Tennis Courts Tuesday.

“It’s a great way to start off 2008,” said GWA coach Lori Wienbarg. “The players have been working hard during the offseason and at practice. It was good to see everyone playing well.”

Both George Walton teams enjoyed success last year. Unfortunately for Wienbarg and her program, one loss kept the Bulldogs from clinching the region championship and advancing to the state team tournament.

“Both teams should be very competitive top to bottom,” Wienbarg said of her new groups. “I have many returning players and I also look forward to seeing how well my younger players on the varsity roster will contribute.”

Wienbarg has been coaching the GWA tennis teams for the past 10 years.

The GWA boy’s team (1-0) dominated every point as they claimed both doubles matches. Freshmen Dallas Cruce and Brian Pohl blanked Hugh Willard and Giancarlo Rodriguez 10-0 at No. 1 doubles. Senior Taylor Giles and junior Joey Roppo teamed up at No. 2 doubles and blanked Devin Miller and Adam Abdul-Jabbar, 10-0.

In singles action, No.1 senior Kyle Morris defeated Percy Oliver 10-3, while junior Gordy Morris downed Charlie Almond 10-1 at No. 2. Dillon Horne claimed a 10-2 win at No. 3 singles

On the Lady Bulldogs’ side, GWA (1-0) won 10-0 at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles while claiming a 10-4 victory at No. 3.

In No. 1 singles play, junior Shannon West blanked Pfeiffer McRae.

Junior Jennifer Stevens blanked Caroline Derrick at the No. 2 spot and freshman Amanda Mordt defeated Carlye Creel 10-4 at No. 3.

In doubles, the No.1 team of juniors Bry Barber and Ashleigh Wienbarg topped Whitney Dickson and Kim Krimmel 10-1. Seniors Abbey Ellison and Jennifer Torsiglieri blanked Linsay Boste and Kathleen Mitrano 10-0 at No. 2 doubles.

The next home match for George Walton will be March 6 against region rival Dominion Christian.
