Lady Devils ride rally to win over Heritage

Published February 5, 2010

LOGANVILLE — A tightly paced Heritage zone defense gave Loganville some trouble for a few minutes Tuesday night before the Lady Red Devils found their stroke and cruised to a 59-38 high school basketball win.

The victory left the Loganville girls with a 13-8 overall record, a 10-3 mark in Region 8-AAAA and 5-1 in the subregion. A win at Salem tomorrow in a make-up game and another triumph Tuesday against Rockdale County would give coach Rob Donaldson’s team the No. 1 seed from the South in the region tournament which begins Feb. 12.

The Lady Patriots (9-12, 2-10) stayed even with their more talented opponents early in the first quarter and led 7-6 with 3 minutes, 34 seconds to go in the period. Then recent LaGrange College signee Katie Martin and Chandler Nash each connected on a 3-pointer to put the Lady Devils in front 12-7 with 2:31 remaining and Loganville never trailed again.

Martin led the offense with 17 points and seven assists. Brittnee Hazel had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Kristina Keeble and Enisha Donley each finished the game with 12 points.

“I think Heritage tried to go zone early which was a good idea but we really moved the ball well inside and out and Katie was knocking shots down to force them to come out of the zone,” Donaldson said. “This was nice to see because I see teams trying to zone us up especially if we beat them the first time and they ran man. We are tough to beat when Martin and Nash are knocking shots down from the perimeter.”

Loganville got another 3-pointer from Martin and two field goals from Keeble toward the end of the quarter and led 19-11 when the buzzer sounded.

The second quarter began as did the first — with a Heritage field goal — to cut the deficit to 19-13. From then on, however, the Lady Patriots were held scoreless and the Lady Red Devils reeled off 19 straight points, taking a 38-13 halftime lead.

Donley provided much of the offense with eight points in the period. She and Hazel began to control both backboards, giving their team consistent second and third shots.

“The second quarter was the difference in the game as we continued to mix defenses up and keep Heritage off balance,” Donaldson said. “It also allowed us to push the ball and get some transition buckets.”

The Lady Patriots started the third quarter with six unanswered points, but Loganville came back quickly with a putback basket from Hazel and a 3-pointer by Keeble.

The two teams traded field goals for the remainder of the period, going into the final quarter with Loganville on top, 48-26.

Martin, Donley and Keeble delivered early basketball in the fourth period and Donaldson went to his bench for the final 3:30.

The Lady Devils travel to Salem tomorrow.
