Devils bomb away
Published February 5, 2010
LOGANVILLE — The Red Devils almost set fire to the Inferno Tuesday night, knocking down 16 3-pointers before finally falling to Heritage 74-66 in a Region 8-AAAA boys basketball contest. Twelve of the shots from beyond the arc came in the first and fourth quarters when every field goal fired up by Loganville was a 3-ball.
The long-range assault was the second most prolific in Loganville history. Coach Joel Cooley’s team connected on 19 treys last season in a win over Flowery Branch.
Kyle Baker led the attack with 16 points. Jake Riescher and Nick Ackerman added 14 and 13, respectively.
“This is the first game in who knows how long where we were able to keep it even on the boards, which really paid some dividends for us,” Cooley. “Situations late really hurt us, but that's just from inexperience more than anything. Doing well in certain areas will come with time and experience.”
Heritage took a 45-38 lead into the fourth quarter. The Patriots hit a 3-pointer with 7 minutes, 30 seconds left in the game to go up by 10.
A trey from the corner by Aaron Kennedy cut the deficit to 50-42 with 6:49 left in the game. Following another Heritage field goal, Riescher hit a 3-pointer and was fouled on the play. He converted the free throw to bring the Devils to within 54-49.
Two more 3-pointers by Riescher and one from Baker left the score 62-58 with 2:13 remaining. But Heritage then went on an 8-0 to widen the gap to 70-58 and squelch the rally. The Devils hit nine treys in the period.
“We don’t have the record to prove it, but we are far better than what we were before Christmas,” Cooley said. “The kids have stayed positive, and not given up, and some day that’s going to pay off.”
Loganville visits Salem Saturday.
