Fall events abound in area
Published October 16, 2009
As the season of ghosts and goblins approaches, there are a few more treats than tricks to be found locally.
The Corn Dawgs Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch on Highway 81 in Walnut Grove, a treat for the whole family, is open to the general public from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays. Sponsored by many local businesses, Corn Dawgs offers 15 seasonal attractions as well as live music, movies and special events between now and Oct. 31. The cost is $10 for children 4 to 12, $12 for anyone 13 and up and free for children 3 and under. A season pass is $25. Information about what is effectively a seasonal theme park right in the community can be found on the Web at www.corndawgs.net.
Another themed weekend event is Summit Baptist Church’s Omega fifth presentation of the Omega Trail, a 45-minute walking tour depicting scenes of what things might look life if Christ returned today. This will be held tonight and Saturday and again Oct. 23 to 25 at the church located at 3080 Highway 81 South in Loganville and the cost for all ages is $5. Some scenes, however, are not recommended for children under 12.
From 7 to 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow the Gwinnett History Museum is holding the second annual Haunted Night at the Museum at the Lawrenceville Female Seminary at 455 S. Perry St. in Lawrenceville. Actors portraying characters from Gwinnett’s past will wander the building and grounds to share scary tales and stories from long ago. There will also be activities for all ages including children’s crafts and face painting. The cost is also $5 per person and pre-registration is strongly recommended at 770-822-5178 or at www.gwinnettparks.

Another treat, this time for the business community, is the Third Annual Chamber Bowl Expo to be held Oct. 22, courtesy of the Walton and Greater Grayson chambers of commerce. Instead of just the expo, the event will be held at the Oasis Bowl and will include a bowling tournament.
The bowling tournament, with Team WCC facing off against Team GGCC, will run from noon until 4 p.m. and business after hours will follow from 5 - 7:30 p.m. Cost per bowler is $35, which includes 3-hours of bowling, shoe rental, pizza snack and unlimited popcorn, soda and door prizes. Sponsors are still being sought for the after hours expo. For more information visit www.walton
chamber.org or www.graysonchamber.

The next treat is one for chili cooks and connoisseurs alike. The fifth annual Hot Tamale Chili Cook-off will run from 11 to 3 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Grayson City Park. This is another GGCC event in conjunction with the Grayson Cluster Schools Foundation with net proceeds benefiting both organizations. The cost is $5 per person with children under 5 free. Tickets are available from GGCC or at the event.
The Hot Tamale Chili Cook-off includes children’s activities, other vendors and live entertainment. Further information as well as sponsorship opportunities can be found on the Web at www.grayson
chamber.com.
At the end of the month, the littlest Halloween revelers get an opportunity to collect their own edible treats at the Twelfth Annual Trick or Treat on Main Street from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 31. Local merchants and civic organizations will hand out treats to children from second-grade and younger and they will also have the opportunity to take a hayride.
Next month the city of Loganville is unveiling it’s first Autumn Heritage Festival featuring an assortment of crafters, local businesses and food vendors. This will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7 and promises plenty of crafters highlighting their workmanship, live entertainment and tasty food from local eateries. There will be more information published in the next couple of weeks on this festival that Loganville officials hope will be the start of an exciting new annual tradition.
