Shhh ... Loganville’s going green

Published February 5, 2010

Ah, those progressive leaders of Loganville.

In a time when it’s en vogue to spit in the face of issues like “global warming” and saying your “going green” would get you kicked out of any Waffle House, Loganville city officials are making an effort to do their part to help the environment.

I recently got an e-mail from Sarah Waters, account executive of Cookerly Public Relations, who shared some interesting news about the city.

“I thought you might want to share with your readers that the city of Loganville has signed on as an employer Partner of The Clean Air Campaign to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the area,” she wrote. “Joining The Clean Air Campaign will help the city save money on operations and allows city workers to more easily take advantage of alternative commute options.”

Who’s going to argue with that? (Oops I forgot about the “It’s a myth” crowd.)

The city is a “Silver Level Partner,” meaning it has met “Bronze Partner” criteria and achieved a 21 to 25 percent employee participation rate in commute-options programs or offers at least three additional programs from a qualified list.

“What’s more is that the city recently signed on to reduce unnecessary diesel idling of city vehicles through The Clean Air Campaign’s Idling Reduction Program,” Waters said.

That makes Loganville one of nine municipalities in the state with an anti-idling policy in the works.

I asked Bill Jones, the city manager of Loganville, about the importance of helping keep the environment clean and helping lessen the traffic congestion in the city.

“We signed on to implement our no idle policy for diesel vehicles,” Jones said. “We believe this organization plays a very important part of traffic congestion and air pollution and that is why we signed on.”

Jones, the wiley one he is, challenged members of our staff to jump on board, pointing out a few of our staffers’ routes through the city to work.

“How about The Tribune?,” Jones asked. “You could become a partner especially with your route drivers.”

Who says government types don’t have a sense of humor?
