Children camp out for homeless

Published December 14, 2007

LOGANVILLE — When members of the Church at the Grove arrived at Youth Middle School for worship Sunday, they had to pass a cardboard city for the homeless that provided shelter for many of their children Saturday night.

“It was a way to highlight the plight of the homeless and let the youth experience just for a night what it is like for thousands of people who live on the streets every day of their lives,” said the church’s youth leader Nathan Boyd. “The children involved were all from the middle and high school youth group.”

Some of the teenagers who spent the night in the cardboard boxes said they learned more than just how tough it is for homeless people. They also learned a little about themselves.

“We realized just how blessed we really are,” said Katie Lewis, 15. “We expected to freeze but it wasn’t as bad as it is for the people who are really homeless. They don’t get Bojangles delivered to them in the morning like we did. We knew we were here just for the night and we would get to go home to our warm beds the next night. We also had soup delivered to us during the night when we were cold. They don’t get soup delivered to them when they get cold and people make them get up and move all the time. They never know where they are going to be able to sleep the next night. We had blankets and warm covers and even then it was cold and damp from the dew.”

Boyd said some of the youth who weren’t asleep in the early hours of the morning had the opportunity to sit around a fire on the sidewalk and discuss just what the experience had taught them.

“It was really great to hear how it affected them and what they learned from the experience,” Boyd said.

“It’s so sad that we only think about this now at the holidays because we are encouraged by the season to think of others,” said Allie McClain, 15. “But the homeless people live like this all the time. I have a warm bed, food and warm clothes every night and we have fun things to do. We have so much to be thankful for.”
