LOGANVILLE — The Covenant Christian Academy boys and girls basketball teams have continued playing well this season with both teams sporting winning records. The boys are 9-6 overall and 2-3 in regional play, while the Lady Cougars stand at 8-5 and also 2-3 in regional play.
In their first games after the Christmas break, the Cougars welcomed Heritage Christian Academy on Jan. 7. In the girls game, Ashley Deaton led the team in scoring with 12 points, but the Lady Cougars dropped the game to the Crusaders, 37-20. The boys lost a hard fought game, 58-56. The team was led by Aaron Cline on the scoreboard with 15 points and the glass with 11 rebounds.
On Jan. 9, both teams traveled to region foe Praise Academy. The Lady Cougars won their match 36-21, led by Albertine Nebo’s 14 points. Kasey Blalock had six points and 10 rebounds in the victory. The boys lost another heartbreaker, 64-63.
Shooting just 43 percent from the foul line was just too hard to overcome for the Cougars. They had the ball in the closing seconds but could not get the winning basket. The team was led in scoring by Nick Geary with 19 points. Jordan Hardee had 11 points and nine rebounds and Aaron Cline pitched in a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
The Covenant teams were back at home Jan. 11 and both got into the win column with victories over Heritage Christian. The Lady Cougars won 37-20 behind a strong defensive effort by Nebo, Casey Deaton and Blalock. Deaton led all scorers with 12 points. Kelly Williams had a season-high nine rebounds. The boys had a solid 68-39 victory, showing signs of getting their defensive rotations and press in order. The team was led by Clines’ 18 points and 15 rebounds and 17 points by Geary.
On Thursday of that same week, region foe New Creation came into Loganville to take on the Cougars. The CCA girls throttled the Crusaders 31-13 with an outstanding defensive effort and Deaton’s 10 points. The boys picked up a much needed Region 2-A win with a 90-56. After trailing 22-14 after the first quarter, the team, led by senior Alex Williams, outscored the visitors 34-4 in the second quarter. The quarter was highlighted by a two-handed slam dunk over two NCC defenders by Geary. The play seemed to fire up the fans and the team and they never looked back. Williams led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Micah Turner with 18 and Geary’s 15. Sophomore JC Bradley had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in just three quarters of action.
